Hafta…Write is Might

Hafta Magazine is an experiment in alternative media. It is a congregation of some of the best writers in the Indian blogosphere. Hafta showcases their unique style and character across a wide range of topics.

Those are the starting lines of this new online publication that’s now roughly a bit more than 3 months old. There is just so much happening in the blogosphere and there are so many voices to be read n heard out there that it’s difficult to keep track of all these wonderful creations lest friends like b&w point out and tell about their discoveries. ๐Ÿ™‚

The current list of bloggers on the haftakars menu are : –

  • Sidin Vadukut
  • Shalini Usha
  • Lakshman Sethuraman

Besides there is also the front page showing the freshest articles from the current week. The editorial team put all their efforts to make sure a new issue comes out every monday. They have put up a page to give guidelines for new contributors (that’d include you and me as well) to write content for the magazine that they expect to be original and exclusive at least for the week the issue is being published on unless it’s a phenomenal piece. (phenomenal…guess that’s for the editors to decide…hey ed!)

About the website: Let’s talk a bit about the tech gear that this site runs on. The site as reported by the source of the front page is generated using Mambo CMS. You might say that the generator text could have been edited but then Mambo isn’t what people know about and people supporting free software and benefitting from it (by getting to create such a cool site) wouldn’t mind leaving some attribution traces in the code and giving credit to the software. I wonder why the hafta team made a choice of using Mambo. It’ll help add to the general knowledge base as a case study to help those who are planning to come up with sites based on a similar model…weekly publications or something like that. The layout on the whole is not too cluttered but the main content column is a bit narrow and a lot of scrolling up n down is required. readjustment of the column sizes by trial and error should help them improve on that front. But wait! I just figured out Mambo is being made to output the layout using the <table> tags YUCK!! As a fresh project…it’s extremely necessary to convert the HTML to XHTML+CSS for better maintainence of the pages in the long run. Although putting up all articles of the current issue on the front page is probably a way of promoting all of them to equal priority/importance I feel it’d be better to reduce the thumbnails and to sort the articles under the various headings…something on the lines of the Technorati Discover but something original and innovative.

I wish the Haftakars all the best for their mission of making mondays a bit more interesting. It’s Monday! Have you got your copy of Hafta Mag yet?

p.s. hope the haftakars give links to their own primary blogs
